 About Shockwave

Blitzwing is one of a trio of Decepticon triple-changers from the first line of Transformer toys. He is able to change from robot to tank to plane.

Blitzwing is one of the characters that I never paid too much attention to in the cartoons or comics. There wasn't any particular reason, he just didn't really catch my eye much. However, when I ran a poll at the Asylum customizer's forum he ended up winning by a pretty big margin. So, I sketched the character out and really came to like the way his Cuboyd form looked.

The most work was put in with the upper torso on this figure. I had to sculpt a "V" shape into the chest first, sand it down and then add the bottom half of the cockpit onto that in a second step. Then I tested out a few wing shapes using some construction paper until I found one that looked somewhat dynamic but didn't hinder arm movement too much. That was cut out of some thick styrene material and glued to the back of the chest. Finally, I put together the tank turret using the top of an old Knight helmet and the inside of an ink pen for the barrel. That was glued together and then stuck to the back of the wings using a plastic pin, so that it can still swivel if necessary. After all that work, the rest of the pieces were quite simple. A blob of epoxy putty on the lower legs, upper arms and sides of the head and he was just about ready to paint.

Painting took me a bit longer than usual on this figure. Part of it was deciding on the color locations. Each reference picture I found on the web seemed to have his arms, legs and even face changing from tan to purple to grey. I finally just went with what looked good to me, personally. Of all the colors used, the yellow for the head was the hardest to put on. It took four layers, and even after that it isn't as smooth as I would like it to be. However, yellow is the hardest color to work with when you need to cover over any other color below it.

Once everything dried I applied the detailing with a black pigment pen and put on the usual gloss clear coating to protect the pieces. For once I managed to get every single piece sprayed without a single run in the black ink! I like the end result quite a bit. He still isn't a favorite character of mine, but he looks quite good along with his Decepticon brethren.
