 About Cliffjumper

Cliffjumper is another of the very first line of Transformers released in the US by Hasbro in 1984. In the cartoon series he was a brash, ready-to-fight figure that was voiced by Casey Kasem. He was one of the smaller "minibot" line, which included Bumblebee and over a dozen other figures.

Ah, Cliffjumper... to anyone that has looked at my wall of Transformers and wondered "Why?", I point you to this little guy. Cliffjumper was the very first Transformer I ever owned as a kid, and thus has a special place in my collection. After getting that little red car I was hooked forever. I'm almost at 600 figures in my collection now, but it all started there. The original figure is scuffed, scratched and loose in just about ever joint, but that's because I took him just about everywhere with me. Now that he's been re-released I have a better model sitting on the shelf, but I still have the original safely stored away.

I'm not entirely sure why I waited to complete 15 other figures before I started on this one. Possibly because I wanted to get the techniques down a bit before attempting a character that was so near and dear to me. At any rate, this one came together pretty smoothly. The head took a bit of extra sanding to get the smoothly curved sides, and the chest was a two-stage process in order to add the "spoiler" at the top. After those two pieces, the rest of the parts were simple to sculpt. Circles for wheels on the arms and feet, then the bumper parts where the toes would be and it was done. The legs, lower arms and lower torso were just left as they were and painted over (after a small strip of styrene on the lower torso).

The painting made me pause a bit... the toy itself is all red with black arms and legs, then red feet. But the cartoon version has grey arms/legs with a black lower torso and upper arms. I was torn on which version I wanted to create: show-accurate or toy-accurate. After a bit of debating I decided that since all of my other figures have been based on the cartoon, this one should be too.

As always, the red color took the longest to put on. I started with a grey sprayed base coat, then a red sprayed coat in two thin layers, then finally a hand-painted layer of acrylic red paint to seal it all in. I've found from past experience that it's best to seal in the red spray paint with regular acrylic or else ink marks will run far too easily with the final sealant coating. After the red was done on the head, chest and feet, the rest were just single layers of sprayed grey or black. Some detailing work with a thin brush in a few areas and he was ready for sealing! All in all, probably one of the easiest figures to put together, and I'm happy with how the final figure looks.
