About
Optimus Prime |
|
Optmius Prime arrived on movie screens in the US on July 3rd, 2007. He
is once again the leader of a faction of sentient robots called Autobots,
this time coming to Earth in search of the Allspark, a power source for
the Transformer race. |
After putting together 18 Cuboyd Transformers over several months I figured
I was done until after SDCC 2007. However, the more I looked forward to the
new movie coming out on the 3rd of July, the more I thought about making a
movie version of Optimus Prime to go with my
G1 and
Powermaster versions. In the end, I sketched out a
design on paper and started cutting styrene when I was satisfied that it
could be done.
The fabrication phase took a bit longer than normal on this figure. The head required several layers of epoxy to form the face mask, then the brows and finally the crest along the top. After that, the sides of the head were made from two sheets of thick styrene and parts from the Stikfas Nurse kit. The upper arms have armor plates made of styrene, glued on at a bit of an angle, as well as "smoke stacks" on the back (which aren't on the movie character, but I felt were needed). The chest has styrene and round columns added to the back, the upper legs have epoxy wheels, the feet have epoxy "toes" and the lower legs have styrene fenders and epoxy wheels added. Once all the fabrication was done, the painting and detailing began... and went on for several days. The trouble with the movie version of Prime is that he has so many intricate parts, to make him look more realistic on screen. So, I did my best to replicate that in paint. That meant making the red and blue flames, silver accenting and all the black lines all over the place. It felt like it took forever to complete, but I'm definitely glad I spent the extra time to put it all in. I think it really makes the figure "pop" more than it would have with just large blocks of color. One last feature of this custom that's different is the eyes. I used two clear tubes from a Lego set and drilled them through the head from front to back. Then, I colored the front and back sides with a blue sharpie marker. This gives the figure a really nice "light piping" effect when you shine a light onto the back of the head, which is something the Transformer toys have done for years now. I'm much happier with this figure than I thought I was going to be. He's a nice addition to my Autobot ranks. |
